ISIS in Control of Sirte

Friday, May 22, 2015

Sirte, hometown of former Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, has been taken over by ISIS as the militants exploit the vacuum left as civil war divides the country.

ISIS has been occupying the city for the past few months, using it to launch forays around the country. Sirte straddles the coastal highway linking east to west, giving ISIS a strategic jumping off point to launch further attacks.

They are responsible for kidnapping and beheading groups of Egyptians and Ethiopians in the country and have conducted suicide bombings in Benghazi, among other atrocities.
