Thursday, October 6, 2016

Italy’s coast guard reported that in two days almost 11,000 migrants have been rescued off the Libyan coast as they tried to make their way to southern European countries. The coast guard said that on October 4 alone, more than 4,650 people were rescued. Unfortunately, they also recovered 28 bodies on that same day.

More than 20 people were reported to have suffocated in the hold of one overloaded fishing boat, bringing the total death toll for October 3 and 4 to 50, according to a Reuters report.

The coast guard said the migrants on October 4 were rescued from 33 boats, including 27 rubber dinghies and one wooden boat that was believed to have been carrying around 1,000 people.
