Kenya Finance Minister Arrested

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

In an ongoing corruption probe in Kenya, the country’s Finance Minister, Henry Rotich, has been arrested on suspicion of financial misconduct. The suspected crimes revolve around the construction of two dams.

Charges against Rotich, announced on July 22, stem from a police investigation into the misuse of funds in a dam project overseen by the Italian construction company CMC Di Ravenna.

Both Rotich and CMC Di Ravenna have in the past denied any wrongdoing.

Rotich and his co-accused face eight charges, ranging from conspiring to defraud and financial misconduct, Noordin Haji, the director of public prosecutions, said. The minister and other officials will have to resign immediately, he said.
