Kenya is looking for financing to expand its electricity system to add another 1.5 million people to the grid. Kenya Power, the country’s power distributor, is currently in talks with the AfDB to help finance the $150 million needed to expand the grid.
This expansion is the second phase of Kenya Power’s plan to add three million to the grid in the country.
Kenya Power Chief Executive Ben Chumo, in a speech at a meeting to discuss the details said that work on the first phase of the expansion is set to begin in Q4.
“We are now discussing the second facility in less than two years. On the first ($150 million), we have gone through the processes, we are now awaiting for approval,” Chumo said in a speech at a meeting to discuss financing details.
“For the second phase we shall be connecting 310,851 households, which will also generate 1.5 million customers.”
