Kenya Says BG Hit Hydrocarbons in Lamu

Monday, March 17, 2014

Word out of Kenya is that drilling offshore the country in the Lamu Basin has resulted in oil and natural gas being found. The East African country’s Energy Cabinet Secretary, David Chirchir told attendees at a industry forum in Nairobi “British Gas Group has found oil and natural gas.”  Chirchir did add that the find was not commercial but said it was “very prospective. ”

The purported discovery was made while drilling the Sunbird-1 well, which was spud in January on Kenya’s Block 10A. BG holds a 45% stake and operatorship of the block, partnered with PTTEP and Pancontinental Oil & Gas.

The Sunbird-1 well is located in a water depth of 721 meters and is the first ever test of a Miocene Pinnacle Reef offshore East Africa and the first-ever exploration well in L10A in the Lamu Basin offshore Kenya.
