Kenya to Add Additional Power Generation Thanks to Natural Gas

Thursday, September 18, 2014

Kenya could see an additional 500 MW of electricity added to the national grid if things play out the way it plans. The additional power generation would come from the natural gas deposits discovered recently in the country.

Energy minister Davis Chirchir said the government was also considering a second attempt to seek bids for the construction of a 700-MW LNG fired power plant near Mombasa. The government issued a tender previously for the plant although the companies that submitted bids failed to meet the government’s requirements for the project.

The planned addition of 500 MW will help the government in meeting its goal of 5,000 MW of generation capacity by 2017. KenGen plans to add 70 MW in November by tapping underground steam from the Rift Valley, Chirchir said.
