Just one week before Kenyans go to the polls, a senior election official was found murdered. The official was Chris Msando, the election board’s head of information, communication and technology, who had been kidnapped three days prior to his body being found.
Msando was tortured before he died, according to the election board.
There is much concern that this could lead to an outbreak of violence like that seen following the 2007 elections.
Speaking to reporters outside the City Mortuary Waflula Chebukati, chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), said “There’s no doubt that he was tortured and murdered. The only issue is who killed him and why … I demand from the government that they provide security for all members of the IEBC for them to give Kenya free and fair elections.”
Msando’s killing comes as the electoral management body was due to audit its systems, that audit has since been canceled.
The incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta, is seeking a second and final five-year term and is once again running against opposition leader RailaOdinga.Odingamaintains that the ruling party robbed him of a win in both the 2007 and 2013 elections and even took his complaints to court, which dismissed them.
Odinga’s inability to accept the election results in 2007 was what led to the violence that erupted following the vote. Political protests and ethnic violence killed more than 1,200 people following that election.
