Kenyans Look for Concessionaire for Second Terminal at Mombasa

Tuesday, December 30, 2014

Kenya is looking for a concessionaire to operate the first phase of its planned second terminal at the main Mombasa port. The construction of a second terminal is aimed at easing the increased cargo traffic in the East African region.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) said in a Daily Nation advertisement that the first phase of the $300 million terminal will comprise two berths which are due to be handed over by the contractor in March 2016. The new terminal is projected to have a capacity of 450,000, 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a measure of container capacity, and rise to 1.2 million TEUs by 2019.

East Africa has sprung to the forefront of the continent’s oil and gas industry with recent discoveries in Kenya, Mozambique, and Tanzania. The port also handles fuel and consumer goods imports as well as exports of tea and coffee for landlocked countries like Uganda and South Sudan.
