Australian firm Kinetiko Energy spud its first pilot well, the KV-04PT, on the southern exploration right (38ER) of the Amersfoort Project in South Africa. This is the third pilot test well in the current three-hole program, and the eighth to be drilled on the Amersfoort Project.
The company drilled the first seven pilot test wells on the northern Amersfoort Project exploration right 56ER. Of these, six have flared gas, two continue to be flow tested, and four have been shut-in to await a decision on further testing in their vicinity. The company believes that it has clearly demonstrated the wide spread occurrence of gas within both coals and the adjacent sandstones over 56ER and toward that end decided to change the location of the third hole in the current three-hole program from KA-07PTR in 56ER to KV-04PT in the southern license 38ER.
On 38ER a total of eleven exploration holes have been drilled with core samples and down hole geophysical logs showing strong indications of gas in both coals and as conventional accumulations in the adjacent sandstones over an area of 690 sq km, to date. The coal measures and gassy sandstones are typically at depths of 400 to 500 meters plus below surface in 38ER as compared to 350-400 meters depth on 56ER. The proposed pilot test well KV-04PT is located close to core hole KV-04c that intersected gassy coal at a depth of 430 meters and downhole geophysical logs showed strong gas crossovers in the sandstones above and below the coals.
