Libyan Factions Sign UN Peace Agreement

Thursday, July 16, 2015

While the political world has been tuned in to the Iran negotiations, another set of negotiations have been taking place in Morocco aimed at bringing peace to Libya with conditional success. The UN has successfully brokered a new peace deal in Libya, signers of the peace agreement included the internationally recognized government, local and regional leaders.

Unfortunately the unrecognized government in Tripoli was not a participant in the signing. The Tripoli government participated in earlier stages of the talks but backed out of later discussions. The UN is urging them to sign the deal and bring peace to the embattled North African nation.

The next phase of negotiations will be aimed at restoring order to Libya.

Gerry Northwood OBE, COO of maritime security company MAST, said: “While this is a good first step toward a unity government, there remains a question mark over whether the Tripoli based government will become part of the new peace deal.”

The Tobruk based government has successfully retaken the ISIS held town of Derna. ISIS remain in control of Sirte and the surrounding region.

Fighting against Islamists continues with the latest report having a popular army commander killed during fighting in the eastern city of Benghazi after opposing militiamen hit his position with a rocket. A statement issued by health authorities said 1st Sgt. Salem Alniali died in battle with severe head injuries caused by shrapnel in fighting with Islamists.
