Libyan Unity Government Deal Signed

Sunday, December 20, 2015

After a series of false starts and no shows from both sides on different occasions, delegates from Libya’s warring factions have finally signed a UN-brokered agreement to form a national government. The agreement, signed on December 17 in Morocco, is hoped to bring some semblance of stability to the North Africa country.

The rival governments have been battling it out against each other, backed by coalitions of former rebels and militias. The agreement could pave the way for the two sides and various other factions around the country to turn their sights on ISIS, which is making a big push in Libya, taking advantage and further contributing to the ongoing stability.

Representatives from both parliaments signed the accord in the coastal town of Skhirat. “The doors remain wide open to those who are not here today,” UN envoy Martin Kobler said at the ceremony attended by regional foreign ministers. “The signing of the political agreement is only the first step.”

While getting the agreement signed was a tremendous task, putting together the unity government will be an even more enormous feat for Libyans.
