LibyaSPAN Next Up For ION

Friday, November 7, 2014

ION Geophysical Corp. announced that seismic data acquisition for its LibyaSPAN™ multi-client 2D regional survey will commence offshore Libya in mid-November 2014. This survey is a collaborative undertaking between ION and BGP, and is being conducted as part of a joint agreement with Libya’s National Oil Corp. (NOC) and the North Africa Geophysical Exploration Co. (NAGECO).

Phase 1 of the project will encompass 7,718 kilometers of new high-end long-offset seismic data covering the entire Libyan offshore domain. LibyaSPAN is being developed in anticipation of future license rounds in Libya to help oil and gas companies evaluate large regions and focus on areas with the highest chance of success.

Jason Robinson, VP EAME for ION’s GeoVentures unit, commented: “We’re very pleased that this valuable program is moving forward. LibyaSPAN is designed to create a comprehensive picture of the Libyan geology, tying all of the major basins and providing the deep imaging essential to understanding new exploration plays.”

The Libya project is the latest in a series of successful projects ION has conducted in Africa including the East Africa and West Africa Spans as well as over other international basins, said Alan Tidey, Project Manager Multi-client Africa. These Spans have revealed some very interesting finds that had not previously been seen in places like the Comoros and Tanzania.

Final delivery of fully-imaged data from the LibyaSPAN is scheduled for late 2015.
