London Court Rules in Shell’s Favor

Sunday, February 18, 2018

A London court ruled in favor of Shell in regard to oil spills in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. According to media reports, the Court of Appeal in London ruled that two Nigerian communities cannot pursue Royal Dutch Shell in English courts over the spills.

The split decision upheld a High Court ruling last year that was a setback for attempts to hold British multinationals liable at home for their subsidiaries’ actions abroad.

The court rejected the appeal on behalf of Nigeria’s Bille and Ogale communities, and upheld a ruling that English courts do not have jurisdiction over claims against Shell’s Nigerian unit SPDC.
