Lungu Sees Victory in Zambia

Tuesday, August 16, 2016

Zambia’s electoral commission announced the results from the country’s presidential election on August 15. According to the commission incumbent Edgar Lungu has been re-elected by a narrow margin. Lungu’s main opponent, Hakainde Hichilema, has claimed the vote was rigged.

Hichilema was the candidate from Zambia’s United Party for National Development (UPND). The UPND plans to appeal the results at the Constitutional Court.

Lungu, who narrowly beat Hichilema in a vote last year to replace late president Michael Sata, won 50.35% of the vote against 47.63% for his opponent. According to regulations in Zambia the candidate must win with over 50% of the vote; Lungu just squeezed by.
