Peter Mutharika won presidential elections in Malawi over incumbent Joyce Banda and former preacher Lazarus Chakwera. Mutharika, former foreign minister, won 36% of the vote followed by Chakwera with 28%, and Banda came in third receiving 20% of the vote. Banda marks the country’s first president to lose an election serving a consecutive term.
Mutharika was accused of plotting to topple Banda’s government and charged with treason in March 2013, although he denied the claims. Banda attempted to have the election results thrown out, but was overruled by a high court.
