Mali Wants Sonatrach Back

Mali is looking for Algeria’s state-run firm Sonatrach to resume its exploration program in the country. Malian Minister of Mines and Petroleum Tiemoko Sangare expressed this to his Algerian counterpart, Mustapha Guitouni.

In a statement from the Malian Ministry of Mines & Petroleum, Minster Sangare said that his country wants an Sonatrach as an active presence in Mali’s exploration effort.

In a meeting between Guitouni and his Malian counterpart, on the sidelines of an industry event in the Algerian city of Oran, Sangare stressed “Algeria’s great experience in the hydrocarbon industry,” expressing his wish to have “more intensive (bilateral) cooperation and an active presence of Sonatrach in Mali.”

The two officials examined cooperation between Algeria and Mali, dubbing it “good” and “historic.” They discussed the prospects for its development in the energy field, especially hydrocarbons (research and exploration in Mali), according to the statement.
