Heavy lifting and transport firm Mammoet met some challenges in taking on a job in Algeria. The company transported a 400-ton Siemens gas turbine generator from Algiers port to the Cap Djinet power plant project site.
Due to an earthquake in 2003, the infrastructure along the route was in poor repair, leaving the condition and weight-bearing capacity of a number of bridges uncertain which led to the government from prohibiting the transport of the turbine to the Cap Djinet plant by road.
Since it could not travel by road, Mammoet devised a solution that involved moving the cargo via barge 70 km along the coast. The generator was transported on and off the barge on 24 axle lines of SPMTs, avoiding double handling at the port and on site. Mammoet said that this reduced the handling risks and enabled a safer, quicker transport. During the sea transport 400 tons of stools and beams were used to secure the cargo. The transport was safely executed in seven hours.
“This smart solution saved time and costs, while reducing risk for the client,” a statement from the company said. This is not the first time Mammoet has transported equipment for Algeria’s power industry and will most likely not be the last. Algeria has 14 power plants planned with eight currently under construction; Mammoet has been involved in transport operations for four of these projects so far.
