After the second round of legislative elections, Mauritania’s ruling party, Union for the Republic Party (UPR), has won a ruling majority in parliament. Many parties boycotted the elections insisting that transparency and fairness were out of reach.
According to the December 22 results, the UPR retained 74 seats in the 147-member National Assembly. Its other allies received 34 positions while the opposition got 37 seats of which 16 were taken by Islamist party, Tawassul.
