MEND Claims Credit for Pipe Sabotage

Monday, March 31, 2014

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has taken credit for the sabotage of an undersea pipe that forced Shell to stop exports from the Forcados terminal on March 4. MEND said that it sabotaged the pipeline with scuba divers on March 1.

While Shell blamed “unknown persons (who) installed a crude theft point,” the MEND statement said, “We were successful in causing further damage to the on-going repair works, inflicting the heaviest toll ever on the oil industry since the commencement of ‘Hurricane Exodus.’

‘Hurricane Exodus’ was declared by the group in mid-June as a campaign to wage war “against injustice, corruption, despotism and oppression.”
