Metso Offers Namibia Refinery Aid

Monday, June 9, 2014

Namibia may have an oil refinery on its horizon as Finnish firm Metso expressed interest in helping Namibia set up the refinery. The company’s VP for Services Business Line, Timo Hanninen said in an interview with Nampa that Metso was willing and ready to help Namibia build up “the best possible crude oil project.”

The Metso VP revealed his company’s interest in Namibia while attending the Finland-Namibia Business Forum in Helsinki. “We heard that Namibia is planning to invest in establishing its own oil refinery, and Metso is also very much interested to help in building up the project’s specifications,” he said.

Metso is a supplier of technology and automation services to customers in the mining, construction, and oil and gas industries.

The refinery was also the subject of a meeting between Namibia’s president Hifikepunye Pohamba and his counterpart from Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan in March. It was proposed that the two governments construct a joint oil refinery to maximize cooperation in the energy sector.

The refinery, which would be located in the Namibian harbor town of Walvis Bay, would be wholly privately-financed and cost $10 billion.
