Midwestern Calls for Arrest of Umusadge Attackers

Monday, September 16, 2013

Midwestern Oil and Gas, operator of the Umusadege field in Nigeria, condemned the attack on its facilities earlier in the month by armed youths. In a statement the company lamented the inhuman treatment that the attackers meted out on its personnel and maintained that the attack was unwarranted and called for the arrest and prosecution of those behind the attack.

The statement went on to say that the company had previously been warned by a group going under the aegis of the Umusadege Youth Forum that an attack would take place unless the group’s demands were met. Midwestern said that the groups allegations and demands were “as strange as they were unfounded.”

“The allegations were as strange as they were unfounded, given the fact that the company has been very active in the discharge of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which has been through scholarship awards to the youths of the community, renovation of classrooms, building of roads, offering skill acquisition trainings, provision of water scheme, etc,” the Midwestern statement said.

The company stressed that the assailants were unknown both to the community and the company, as its relationship with the Umusadege community remained cordial and warm.
