NNPC, Nigeria’s state-run oil and gas firm, said that unless militants in the Niger Delta are stopped they could cripple the company. The attacks over the past several months have caused Nigeria’s production to plummet around 700,000 bpd and have removed its title as Africa’s number one producer.
More than one militant group has emerged recently from the swamps of the Niger Delta to wreak havoc on the country’s oil sector. There is the Niger Delta Avengers, which have claimed responsibility for most of the attacks. The group said in August is would halt its attacks to pursue talks with the government, but that still leaves other groups such as the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate to carry out attacks on NNPC and international firm’s facilities.
In a statement NNPC said “If the current situation remains unchecked, it could lead to the crippling of the corporation and the nation’s oil and gas sector, the mainstay of the Nigerian economy.”
The statement was issued by NNPC following a meeting on Saturday held by Maikanti Kacalla Baru, group managing director, and a number of his predecessors including the oil minister, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, whom he replaced in July.
“Insecurity is threatening production and damaging the Niger Delta environment. There is the urgent need for government and security agencies to refocus as well as engage the various host communities,” said the statement.
