Libya has seen another act of terrorism from militants claiming loyalty to ISIS last week. The latest incident had the militants seizing the university in the city of Sirte; just two days prior they had seized Sirte’s administrative complex.
A picture posted on social media showed an Islamic State flag at the university’s entrance. The militants had also taken over a radio station and other government buildings according to some of the residents.
Sirte, besides being former Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi’s hometown, is the stronghold of Ansar al-Sharia the Islamist group blamed for the 2012 assault on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi which killed the ambassador.
Days prior to the most recent incidents in Sirte, Egyptian planes struck suspected Islamic State targets in eastern Libya, after the group released a video showing the execution of 21 Egyptian Christians kidnapped in Sirte.
Both Libya and Egypt have petitioned the UN Security to lift an arms embargo and help build up the army to tackle the jihadists.
