Militants Threaten War if Jonathan is Not Reelected

Monday, February 2, 2015

Niger Delta militants appear to be unhappy with the way Nigeria’s main opposition party and northern politicians have been portraying incumbent candidate President Goodluck Jonathan’s record.

Kennedy Tonjo-West, aformer Niger Delta militant was quoted as saying in an AFP report, “We are not happy with the constant attacks on the person of Jonathan in the north and if they don’t stop such molestation we will be forced to retaliate.”

“We will fight back. If and when we do, Boko Haram will be child’s play. We shall prove to them that no-one has a monopoly of violence,”Tonjo-West went on to say.

Nigeria’s president is from southern Nigeria, which is home to a number of militant groups, including the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, who is infamous for attacks across the Niger Delta.

Tonjo-West was not the only militant to come to the defense of Nigeria’s president, other former rebels including MEND leaders have threatened violence if Jonathan does not win the upcoming elections.

Anniko Briggs from the Niger Delta Self-Determination Movement said in the AFP report that not to re-elect him would be ungrateful, as the spoils of crude are shared across the whole country. “If for any reason Jonathan is denied power come February 14, we will renew our agitation and this time, we shall ask for 100% ownership and control of our resources,” she said.

“If our son is not good enough to be president, then our oil cannot be available for other regions. We shall tell the Yorubas to go and use their cocoa, the Hausas their groundnut and Igbos their palm produce,” she added, which could be seen as a not so subtle threat since currently the only oil production comes from the south and northern states can ill afford to be without it.
