Military Bases for Oil Facilities in Algeria

Thursday, July 11, 2013

In light of the growing security situation across North Africa, Algeria has decided to construct military bases near major oil and gas facilities in the south to guarantee fast response in case of danger, a security source told Xinhua.

This news follows the attack on the In Amenas gas facility earlier this year which gave some foreign operators cause to review their investments in the country.

Since May, Algeria’s Ministry of National Defense has been engaged with local construction firms in setting up bases near oil and gas fields in Hassi Messaoud, Tin Fouye Tabankort, and in Adrar.
Following the attack on the In Amenas plant Abdelhamid Zerguine, CEO of Sonatrach, acknowledged the existence of “security gaps” around the oil and gas facilities across the country.
