Mohammad Barkindo, OPEC Secretary General, Nigerian Oil Executive Dies at 63

Thursday, July 7, 2022

OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, passed away Tuesday in his home country of Nigeria. The international oil industry is in a state of shock, as the beloved industry figure was only 63 years of age when he passed.

Barkindo was the outgoing secretary general of OPEC and was set to step down this month following his six-year tenure at the top spot in the cartel. Barkindo spent many years with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (since 1992) including in the top position of Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer from January 2009 to April 2010.

Over the years Barkindo also served as Special Assistant to the Minister of Petroleum Resources with various administrations.

From 2003, Petroleum Africa has followed Barkindo in his numerous capacities as a captain of the Nigerian oil industry as well as a respected global industry figure. Most recently, in March, we had the opportunity to see Barkindo receive an award at Energy & Corporate Africa’s Nigeria Energy Forum in Houston for his years of distinguished service to the industry.

Our sincere condolences go out to Barkindo’s family, friends, and associates. He will be missed greatly. Rest in peace dear sir.
