New attacks by ISIS in Libya have led to another terminal igniting in flames. The embattled North African country saw the Islamist militants launch new attacks aimed at seizing export terminals, the country’s key revenue source.
According to NOC reports fighting broke out on January 21 near the Ras Lanuf terminal. “Storage tanks filled with crude have caught fire,” the state-run firm said in a statement, adding that nearby high-voltage power lines and electrical towers were also damaged and down.
NOC said the situation at Ras Lanuf was “catastrophic for the environment.”
Libya’s state news agency, LANA, reported that ISIS militants were behind the attack and that the storage tankers belonged to Harouge Oil Operations.
The blaze at Ras Lanuf follows a fire in the first week of January at the Es Sider terminal where clashes that began on January 4 between ISIS militants and guards at Es Sider led to fires at oil storage tanks at the port.
