More Libyan Problems as Embassies and Companies Depart

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Problems continue to mount in Libya as companies and embassies reduce staff over continuous political turmoil. The UK withdrew some of its embassy staff with the Foreign Office citing “ongoing political uncertainty” being its reason.

In response to the UK’s decision, oil giant BP withdrew some of its non-essential staff issuing a statement: “Following [Foreign Office] advice given to us by the British Embassy in Tripoli, and purely as a precautionary measure, we have brought non-essential overseas staff out of Libya for the time being in a phased reduction of numbers.”

Armed groups had blocked access to ministry buildings trying to force their demands to be met. A law was recently passed, seemingly in response to the demands, barring any Qaddafi-era officials from holding a political office. On May 11 it appeared that the groups lifted their siege tactics that had been ongoing for two weeks on the Ministry of Justice and Foreign Ministry buildings in Tripoli.
