In eastern Libya, more than 140 people have been killed in an attack on a Libyan airbase, the Brak al-Shati airbase. In addition, according to reports a spokesman for the east Libyan armed forces said scores of troops are thought to have been killed in acts of summary execution.
A spokesman for the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (LNA) confirmed May 19 that 141 people, most of whom were LNA soldiers, were killed the day before in an attack carried out by a Brigade known as The Third Force.
The Third Force is a militia group that is reportedly aligned with the UN-backed government in Tripoli.
LNA spokesman Ahmad al-Mesmari said Islamist militants were also thought to have been involved.
While the death toll could not be independently verified, al-Mesmari said that 103 of those killed were LNA soldiers, while the rest were civilians.
