Tuesday, March 9, 2021

An explosion at a military facility in Equatorial Guinea was rocked by a powerful explosion on Sunday, killing at least 98 and wounding over 600. So far at least 60 people have been saved, having been buried under rubble. The blasts were so powerful they destroyed many homes in the community.

Initially, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema stated that mishandling of dynamite was the cause of the explosion. Later, his son and vice president Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue said investigations so far showed the fire may have been the result of a nearby farmer setting fire to his land with winds spreading the flames to the nearby barracks where explosives were stored.

Investigations into the cause continue.
