Morocco Revives LNG Terminal Plans

Thursday, December 18, 2014

Morocco is reviving plans for a LNG terminal at the industrial hub of Jorf Lasfar, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Abdelkader Amara told reporters. The plan has been on the drawing board for a few years but until recently the government never made a move to progress it forward.

The terminal, if built, will cost an estimated $4.6 billion and allow Morocco to import up to 7 Bcm of gas by 2025, the minister said. The project would include a jetty, terminal, and pipelines. The government is also planning a regasification unit at the Jorf Lasfar port.

“All the projects will be awarded via international tenders in total transparency,” Amara said. “The first step in early 2015 will be negotiations of supplies with gas exporters to get the best deals. If they fail (negotiations), we will launch tenders directly in the international markets.”
