Morocco’s Energy Minister Asks for Japanese Investment

Monday, April 28, 2014

Morocco’s Minister of Energy, Mines, Water, and the Environment Abdelkader Amara is calling on Japanese investment in the North African country’s energy sector, including renewable energy. “We are increasingly interested in Japanese investments the field of energy in the context of an enlarged cooperation that includes sub-Saharan Africa,” Amara said.

In March 2012, Japan and Morocco signed a bilateral agreement worth $3.6 million to help Morocco’s economic growth. And nearly one year ago, Japan announced that it would invest $2 billion in energy projects throughout the continent. Morocco has also been keen to shore up non-Western investments especially in regards to its solar ambitions in the disputed territory of the Western Sahara. Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar told Reuters that several investors, including those from Japan, were interested in the planned solar projects.
