Mozambican Gas for Kenya Project

Monday, April 16, 2018

Kenyan and Mozambican officials met in Maputo to discuss how to market Mozambican gas in Kenya. The talks between the two countries are part of Kenya’s project to install a 700 MW thermal power station near the port city of Mombasa.

The objective of this plant will be to produce enough electricity from gas, to not only meet the demand at half-mast, but also to anticipate an increase in consumption over several years.

Since there are no land borders between the two countries, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is the option considered by both parties to materialize the agreement, according to reports. The start of LNG production in Mozambique is scheduled for the end of the year 2022 or early 2023.
