Mozambique has begunre placing diesel with 500 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur with diesel thatisonly 50 ppm of sulphur in all filling stations, the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy said in a statement. The Ministry said the 500 ppm diesel is being completely eliminated from the Mozambican market and only diesel that has a 50 ppm sulphur rating is now being imported.
“The change has been made for environmental reasons because sulphurisre garded as a pollutant and diesel with a lower sulphur content is less damaging to the environment,” the statement said.
The Ministry said the benefits of the initiative includ ereduce drisks to human health since the fuel burnt in diesel-powered vehicles and machines will becleaner and emit less particulate matter. The government will launch a crack down on the production and distribution of oil products that do not meet the new requirement and will strengthen the supervision of oil refiners and ruralgas stations.
The switch to 50 ppm diesel isamong the recommendations made by the UNEP, which is urging African countries to market more sustainable and less harmful fuels.
