Mozambique’s Bar Association (OAM) has determined that the right of land use transferred to gas exploration companies in the Rovuma Basin in northern Mozambique is illegal.
“Land granted to LNG plants has been removed from affected communities through obscure mechanisms and without legal foundation,” said Ricardo Moresse, president of the OAM Human Rights Commission at a press conference. He went on to say that the minutes of the public consultations of the land allocation process were fraudulent.
Moresse told the press conference that the OAM had requested the nullification of the land concession before the Administrative Court.
The right of land use and exploitation for the LNG projects was given to the firms set on developing discovered resources in Mozambique’s deepwater licenses; specifically, ENI and Anadarko.
The association advocates the creation of a plan for human rights, as an instrument that will make it possible to hold those who violate these rights accountable.
“We demand a fair decision by the Administrative Court so that the process is clarified and the project is developed with full respect for human rights,” he said.
