Mubarak Inaugurates Upper Egypt Gas Pipeline

Monday, January 3, 2011

Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak closed out 2010 with the inauguration of the Upper Egypt Gas Pipeline during his tour to the Aswan governorate. Mubarak gave the signal to begin the launch of the gas complex in Aswan, and unveiled a commemorative plaque for the project.

Mubarak started his tour by inaugurating the Natural Gas Pipelines Complex in Aswan, then went on to initiate a number of  services and development projects, which aim to promote the public services and improve the living conditions of citizens and increase employment opportunities for what the Ministry of Petroleum’s website says is “the young generations and graduates.”

Investment in all the phases of the pipeline reached LE5.7 billion with the extension from Giza to Aswan. The pipeline connects homes and businesses in Aswan to Egypt’s natural gas grid for the first time.

The pipeline was constructed in five stages by several Egyptian companies; the first phase of the project extends from Cairo to a power station located near Beni Suef; stage two extends 150 km from Beni Suef to Abu Qurqas; stage three extends 136 km from the governorate of Minya to Assiut; while stage four extends 100 km from Assiut to Sohag. The final stage involved the laying of 408 km of 30 inch diameter pipeline from Sohag to Aswan and was commissioned in late November. With a current capacity of 8 bcm annually, capacity is expected to reach 12 bcm by 2014.

The companies involved in the pipeline were commended by Fahmy for implementing and completing the pipeline in “record time.”
