Algeria’s newest Minister of Mines and Energy, Nouredine Bouterfa, plans to put a greater focus on the promotion of natural gas production.
Bouterfa is a downstream expert with a background in the natural gas sector stemming from his time at Sonelgaz, a state-owned utility, since 2004. Appointed in mid-June,Bouterfahas advocated for higher energy prices with the aim of increasing state revenues and curbing rising domestic demand in order to increase export volumes.
According to PGI Intelligence the new minister will need to move quickly to bring about reforms in the sector and attract increased foreign interest in the gas sector. His predecessor, Salah Khebri, was given just a little over a year to attract new investment before being replaced.
