Just when things were looking up for production in Nigeria, the country has a new militant group coming up the ranks in the Niger Delta, the New Delta Avengers. While not to be confused the Niger Delta Avengers who restrained Nigeria’s production last year, the New Delta Avengers are taking a page out of the old groups’ book.
The New Delta Avengers issued their first statement recently, giving companies operating in the Niger Delta and the Nigerian government a glimpse into their agenda. The groups statement is reminiscent of various other militant groups’ agendas in the Niger Delta.
“By this declaration, we are resurrecting the spirit of insurgency to demand for a better deal for our people,” the New Delta Avengers statement said. “We are going to do this through bloody attacks and destruction of oil assets in the creeks and upland areas so as to disrupt and eventually cripple oil prospecting and production operations in the state.”
The group is especially focused on the governor of the Delta state, Ifeanyi Okowa, accusing him of diverting funds from programs meant to benefit Delta state. “Like the biblical Pharaoh, only extraordinary undertakings can soften his devilish and hardened heart towards the oil producing areas of the state,” the Group said of Okowa.
The New Delta Avengers warned the Delta state government that “Operation Cripple Oil and Gas Production” would start on June 30 unless it held talks to ensure funding for infrastructure and other development reaches the region.
While the militant groups of old have suspended or canceled their harassment of the industry in the Niger Delta to participate in peace talks with the government, the New Delta Avengers apparently mean to take over where groups like MEND and the Niger Delta Avengers left off. Although the group has yet to launch any attacks, the industry will be on the watch for them.
