New Ministers for Algeria

Friday, September 13, 2013

The first real political action in Algeria since the country’s president Abdelaziz Bouteflika had a stroke in April has taken place. Bouteflika has named several new ministers including a new minister for foreign affairs, interior, and justice. The move is seen as a way to strengthen Bouteflika’s allies on the run to elections in April of next year, although the president is not expected to run again.

A new vice defense minister was also appointed according to state APS news agency. APS quoted a presidential statement naming Ramtane Lamamra, an African Union official, as foreign minister, and Tayeb Belaiz as interior minister.

Ministries maintaining their top leaders were energy and finance. Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal also remains in office.
