New Prime Minister for Ethiopia

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Following the surprise resignation of long-term Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn in February, the country’s parliament finally elected a new leader. Desalegn resigned amid months of deadly protests in the Oromia and Amhara region of the country that led to hundreds of deaths.

The new leader, 41-year old Abiy Ahmed Ali, is a former lieutenant-colonel in the army and head of Ethiopia’s Ministry of Science and Technology. His first major task will be to bring calm to the regions in turmoil who are now calling for a greater political voice in addition to solving a lands rights issue which initially stirred the unrest.
