New Strike Threat for South Africa

Sunday, July 31, 2016

South Africa is under threat of another strike, this time by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). The union said it will launch a strike against Eskom starting August 8.

“The strike will start on the 8th of August,” NUM General Secretary David Sipunzi told a media briefing.

Eskom is said to be in arbitration with the union.

Sipunzi said the NUM members had the right to strike and that the law was not a barrier. “This is why they do not want to negotiate seriously with us, they are hiding behind that,” he said. The union is said to have reduced its salary demands from 13% for the lowest paid members from 18% and to 12% from 16% for the rest.

Eskom is offering 7%.

South Africa is also under strike action from the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU). The union, which refinery workers belong to, went on strike on July 28.
