NGOs Against Nigeria/Morocco Pipeline

Thursday, April 5, 2018

The proposed pipeline between Nigeria and Morocco is facing opposition from a host of NGOs. Near the end of March a group of NGOs signed a joint declaration called “Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline: no interest for us,” to oppose the project to build a pipeline of 5,000 km between Nigeria and Morocco.

Members of the group include the Youth Climate Coalition, Friends of the earth, Oil Watch, Food & Water Europe, as well as NGOs from Nigeria and Morocco.

These organizations say they are concerned about the timeliness of the project and say that the pipeline, which is expected to cost $20 billion, is likely to cost more, given the current market realities, the size of the pipeline and the impacts that the project will have.

“This project will be a financial pitfall (…) It is likely that the projected cost of $20 billion will probably be doubled and lead to an exponential increase in the debt burden of our countries,” the statement said.
