Niger Delta Avengers Back on the Scene

Sunday, February 17, 2019

Nigerian militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, have returned to the limelight with a new threat to the country’s oil and gas industry. The group warned that if current president Muhammadu Buhari is re-elected there would be “a perpetual recession for Nigeria”.

The group, in a statement said they hoped to end Buhari’s rule through elections and that opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar was their preferred choice for president.

Buhari faces a tight contest against Atiku, in an election that was postponed until next week.

A statement from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said, “Following a careful review of the implementation of the logistics and operational plan, and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible. This was a difficult decision for the commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of elections and the consolidation of our democracy,” chairman of the INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, said early Saturday.
