Rumbles in Nigeria’s political arena are being felt, with warnings going out from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against any attempt to stage a coup. The APC said it would foil any attempt made to upset the status quo.
While currently Nigerian’s follow the democratic process, it hasn’t always been that way with the West African country being home to some of the continent’s most bloody coups.
The warning came from Bola Tinubu, head of the APC and follows an edict by the chief of army staff last week for officers to steer clear from politics and said he had received information that some soldiers had been approached by individuals for “undisclosed political reasons.”
“Just a few days ago we heard a warning that some people were trying to entice the military out of the barracks. I want to add my voice to that warning,”Tinubu, who leads President Muhammadu Buhari’s APC party, said in a speech to the state assembly in Lagos.
“Those who think they can break the democracy for which so many labored and which too many sacrificed limb and life, are sorely mistaken. Nigeria has come too far for such a thing…. don’t think about it.”
He did not specify who he was referring to in the speech.
Nigeria is currently being run by Yemi Osinbajo, the country’s vice president while Buhari is on medical leave.
