Nigerian Court Dismisses Illegal Export Charges

Thursday, May 9, 2019

A court in Nigeria dismissed claims by the government that units of ENI and Petrobras illegally exported crude into the US. In 2016 the Nigerian government filed a lawsuit claiming that a number of firms had exported crude to the US between 2011 and 2014. According to the Nigerian government, these firms failed to declare all of the exports as required by Nigerian law.

A judge at the federal high court in Lagos said the government had failed to provide enough evidence to support its suit against the local Agip unit of Italy’s ENI and the Brasoil unit of Petrobras. The government’s lawyer said an appeal would be launched against the high court’s decision and would file an appeal by the end of day, May 9.
