Nigeria’s elections on March 28 were not what one would call smooth going; there was violence, a cyber security breach, and an extension in voting. On electionday the electoral commission saw a group calling itself the Nigerian Cyber Army hack into and shut down the electoral commission’s website. The cyber attackers warned officials not to rig the election.
“Strucked by Nigerian Cyber Army,” read the banner at the top of the page, and underneath “security is just an illusion.”
The electoral commission is investigating the hack and disabled the website.
Not only was there a cyber incursion at the electoral commission, but elections experienced major glitches with biometric card readers. The technical glitches led to the extension of voting into March 29. “In polling units where accreditation was suspended to the following day, in accordance with the existing guidelines, arrangements will be made for voters to vote tomorrow,” Commissioner Chris Yimoga told journalists in Abuja.
In northern Nigeria there were a number of incidences of violence with gunmen killing an estimated 15 peoplenear polling stations. Other attacks were carried out by the Boko Haram on voters in the northeast, killing three in Yobe state and three more in Gombe state, according to Nigerian police.
