Nigerian Senate to Investigate Fuel Subsidies

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

A branch of Nigeria’s government, the upper house of parliament, is launching an investigation into an alleged $3.5 billion fuel subsidy fund at state-oil firm NNPC. According to reports the Senate is alleging that the state-run firm used the fund to subsidize the price of imported petrol without approval of the house.

A Reuters report cited Senate President, Bukola Saraki, as saying parliament would set up a committee to look into the issue, while a spokesperson for NNPC said the oil company would await a decision from lawmakers and then decide how to respond.

“We have to call for the resolution (by the Senate), analyze it and respond accordingly,” NNPC said.

Fuel subsidies are a controversial issue in Nigeria, as the subsidies keep prices artificially low. This makes it unprofitable for petroleum marketers to import at global market prices, forcing NNPC to step in to prevent major shortages.

The money NNPC has been using to cover the subsidies is supposed to be included in the national budget and be used only after approval is granted by the national assembly.
