Nigerian Unions Threaten Strike Action

Monday, November 3, 2014

Nigeria’s two main oil worker unions, NUPENG and PENGASSEN, issued the government a 14 day ultimatum to “intervene in the alleged victimization of some of their colleagues by multinational oil firms or risk industrial action.”

In a communique signed by the presidents of NUPENG and PENGASSAN, Achese Igwe and Francis Johnson, respectively, the unions pressed the government to also consider other “pressing issues” that were affecting the country’s oil and gas industry.

Johnson said in the communiqué that the unions were compelled to issue the threat to withdraw their services in the oil sector to draw government’s attention to those pressing issues in the oil sector. Issues listed in the communiqué include the irregular transfer and firing of officers of the two unions by Total Nigeria and ExxonMobil; the violation of workers’ right to unionization at the Export Free Zone in Rivers State, and the non-passage of the PIB.
