Nigerians Sue Chevron for $5 Billion

Thursday, January 23, 2014

US major Chevron is facing a lawsuit in Nigeria over the explosion of the KS Endeavor drilling rig in January 2012 that killed two workers. The plaintiffs in the suit are leaders of the communities in the Niger Delta whose land and waters were contaminated by the disaster.

The lawsuit was filed in a California court, where Chevron is headquartered.

The plaintiffs, who are asking for $5 billion in damages, allege that Chevron refused or failed to halt drilling operations after receiving reports of equipment failures and smoke and gas build-up that lead to the explosion and subsequent leakage of hydrocarbon gases. Some reports say the fire was the result of a failed BOP, similar to what happened in the Gulf of Mexico when the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded.
