Niger’s Soraz Refinery Inaugurated

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Niger inaugurated its first oil refinery, Soraz, on November 28. The inauguration of the refinery marks the country’s official entry into the African oil producing club.

The refinery, a JV between the government and Chinese firm CNPC, will produce refined products at a rate of 20,000 bpd from crude produced from three wells in the Agadem field.

The start up the Soraz refinery makes Niger self-sufficient in its refined oil product needs.

"This is a big day for Niger which has been prospecting for oil for 50 years," Niger’s president Mahamadou Issoufou said at the opening ceremony.

Niger is also set to see a second phase of the project which involves the construction of a pipeline to export excess crude. The pipeline is expected to be built by 2013 to 2014.
